Two Trains Running

August Wilson’s TWO TRAINS RUNNING Playing in the Long Beach Playhouse’s Mainstage Theater Feb. 20 – March 20, 2027 By August Wilson Directed by Rovin Jay It’s 1969, the peak of the Black Power movement, in August Wilson’s mature and intimate take on those turbulent times, TWO TRAINS RUNNING. Memphis Lee’s coffee shop lies in Pittsburgh’s Hill District and serves as a hangout for a host of regulars: Wolf, a numbers runner; Risa, a laconic waitress tired of unwanted attention; Sterling, just released for bank robbery; and Hambone, who can’t let go that he was cheated out of a ham. When the city threatens to raze the restaurant in the name of “urban renewal,” can the lofty ideals of the sixties support the reality of Black hardship in a community on the brink of change?
